Davis' Crossroads |
On September 10-11, 1863 an engagement was fought at Davis' Crossroads in north Georgia as the two armies were maneuvering for position prior to Chickamauga. This ended up being just one of the 10,000 minor actions of the war, however, the new (private?) roadside exhibit postulates an interesting "what-if" (green dot on map below). It is 7 miles from Davis' Crossroads to the intersection of US-27 and GA-193 at Lafayette (purple dot on map below showing route to Lafayette), approximately a 40 minute drive from Chattanooga. This site would probably not be worth a side trip except for its location adjacent to the Crockford Pigeon Mountain Wildlife Management Area - what has got to be one of the prettiest spots in north Georgia. This WMA contains the Shirley Miller Wildflower Trail (yellow dot on map below). Turn off GA-193 onto Hog Jowl Road and then left onto Pocket Road. You won't see any signs for the WMA until after the paved road ends. Late March through mid April is when the wildflowers are really in bloom (including lots of white and red trilliums). An extensive boardwalk loop path is provided over the area. If you continue off the boardwalk to the east there is a short half mile or so hike along the creek which runs down the pocket canyon to a waterfall at the end which you can hike up behind. You can hike back the same way or take the goat path up to the left across the base of the waterfall and take the gravel horse trail back downhill to the parking area. Further south on Hog Jowl Road is Mountain Cove Farm, an impeccably manicured farm that is stunning in the fall. |
