Lookout Mountain

This is one of the must-see sites for visitors to Chattanooga just because of the view.  Militarily it is also worth visiting.  The major sites are the Craven's House with the nearby "rifle pits" and Point Park itself ($2 for adults).  You can drive to each separately, or park at Craven's, see the rifle pits, then walk up tp Point Park and back down to Craven's.

If you really want a feeling of accomplishment, hike up from the bottom to the top of Lookout Mountain (allow 3-4 hours depending on how much time you spend at Craven's House).  The best way is to use two cars, and park the first one at the free parking available at the Incline (purple dot on the map).  Drive the other one around the mountain to just before the Tennessee Wildlife Center (old Chattanooga Nature Center, red dot on the map), and park in the gravel lot at the trailhead for the Kidde Trail.  Head up the Kidde trail, turn right on the Skyuka trail, left at the next trail going up, then left onto the Upper Truck Trail (a much wider trail), then right onto the Rifle Pits Trail and then on to Craven's House and up to Point Park.  See the park, then you can go by the Battles for Chattanooga Museum just outside the gates, and then head over to the Incline for some refreshment and a scenic ride down.   At the bottom is the Tennesse Civil War Museum.

The map below also shows a long dashed line which represents the add-on distance for the "Blue Beaver Trail" which has its patch shown below.  It's a long way to see the Skyuka Spring at the turn around point.  Even the Union forces only went about half way before heading up the mountain (Geary's Crossing).
